Breast reduction makes breasts smaller and firmer by removing fat, glands, and skin. The size of the areola—the darker skin surrounding the nipple—may also be reduced. The goal of a breast reduction is to make the patient's breasts proportional with the rest of her body. Breast reduction is usually performed for relief of back and shoulder pain as well as for cosmetic reasons.
Incisions generally circle the areola and extend downward in an anchor shape. Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin are removed, and the nipple and areola are repositioned. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat from the armpit. The breast is then reshaped and sutured.
- Length of procedure: 2-4 hours.
